Obituary:
Bob's really not here
What can
you say about the news that Bob Hope’s died? Anyone who
reaches the Big 100 has done better than expected, even if it
did seem like Bob would probably go on forever (as some critics
feel he did on stage). And yet here’s someone who did
remain in the public consciousness for so long.
Whilst other stars of the 1930s slipped out of limelight before
the world went tecnicolor, Bob just re-invented himself, from
amateur boxer, through hoofer, singer, to star of stage, the
airwaves, film TV and, of course, war!
For a spell it almost seemed America invaded a country just
to give Bob something to do. The fact that he didn’t make
an appearance during Gulf War II is likely to be seen as a clear
indication that he was nearing the end. Whether Bob’s
death will signal the end to all US-led wars is another matter.
Bob was known for his love of golf, his friendship with 11 presidents,
his appearances in The Road To … series (with Bing Crosby),
and his quips. On this latter point - and here’s a good
way to remember the man - the final word must go to Bob. When
asked by his son whether he’s like to be buried or cremated
Bob responded: ‘Surprise me!’
